  • Daniel Jones Leads Giants Over Cardinals

Daniel Jones Leads Giants Over Cardinals

The New York Giants beat the Arizona Cardinals 31-28.

They entered the Week 2 game against the Cardinals and the first two quarters were an extension of the Week 1 beatdown at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys with Arizona scoring on all but one drive and taking a 20-0 lead into halftime.

The futility was highlighted by a Daniel Jones interception that went right off the hands of running back Saquon Barkley for the second consecutive week.

The Giants did come out in the third quarter and show some fire on the shoulders of Jones, but each time they punched, the Cardinals punched right back.

Then came the fourth quarter and that’s when DJ completely took over and the game flipped on its head. Everything that had gone wrong was washed away and the Giants suddenly started firing.

The defense picked up stops when they needed it and the Giants offense, which couldn’t buy a point for six quarters to start the season, scored on five consecutive drives.

  • Jets QB Aaron Rodgers Out For Season

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers Out For Season

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ 2023 season is over before it ever really got started.

The quarterback was injured on his fourth play of the Jets’ opening game. Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters following the Jets’ 22-16 overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills that the the four-time NFL MVP tore his Achilles tendon.

The injury will be season-ending. On the Jets’ first drive Monday night,  Rodgers was injured and helped off the field by trainers. After a visit to the blue medical tent, he was carted to the locker room. After initially being labeled as questionable to return with an ankle injury, he was later downgraded to out.

Rodgers suffered the injury after being sacked by veteran pass rusher Leonard Floyd on a first-and-10 with 11:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson replaced Rodgers under center. Coach Saleh told reporters after the game that Wilson will be the guy moving forward.

  • Cowboys Dominate Giants 40-0

    Cowboys Dominate Giants 40-0

The first Sunday of the NFL season concluded at MetLife Stadium and  it was a home opener that the New York Giants would soon hope to forget.

The Dallas Cowboys came into East Rutherford and dominated out of the gate en route to a 40-0 win. It was the Giants’ worst shutout loss at  home in franchise history and the Cowboys’ largest shutout win in their  franchise history.

This game was over with pretty early on. The Giants put together a solid opening drive that saw the ball travel down to the Dallas 8-yard line but were unable to punch it in for a touchdown. To make matters worse, the field goal attempt was blocked by the Cowboys, and Noah Igbinoghene scooped up the loose ball and went 58 yards to the house. That lit the wick for Dallas as it went on a 26-0 run to leave New York in the dust by halftime.

This win now gives Dak Prescott 11 straight victories against the Giants, which ties Roger Staubach for the most consecutive wins against the franchise in its history.

  • New York Yankees Sweep Houston Astros

New York Yankees Sweep Houston Astros

It was a whirlwind weekend for Jasson Dominguez, who beamed broadly as he stood in front of his locker in the visiting clubhouse late on Sunday evening, recounting the previous 72 hours in which “The Martian” seemed to make himself right at home in Space City.

Having already hit a home run off likely future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander with his first swing in the Majors, Domínguez delivered again, blasting a go-ahead home run that helped power the suddenly youthful Yankees to a 6-1 victory and a rare sweep of the Astros at Minute Maid Park.

Domínguez launched a two-run blast in the sixth inning off Houston starter Cristian Javier, helping propel New York to its first three-game sweep of Houston since Sept. 27-29, 2013.

This has not been the most fun of seasons for the Yankees. They have been an unenjoyable watch for the majority of this year. That, however, was not the case this weekend.

Thanks to a recent infusion of youth, the Yankees at the very least made themselves a source of intrigue for the three-game set at Minute Maid Park. They turned out to be more than just a curiosity, though, as they churned out a couple compelling victories and capped it off with a 6-1 win to sweep the Astros, their first of Houston in a decade.

  • New York Mets Top Seattle Mariners

New York Mets Top Seattle Mariners

Pitcher Kodai Senga was masterful again and the Mets offense did just enough in Ronny Mauricio’s debut to beat the Mariners 2-1 at Citi Field.

Mauricio made his MLB debut and handled himself well. A natural shortstop, the infielder started at second base and made every defensive play hit his way including a nifty double play in the third inning.

But he was just as impressive at the plate. In his first at-bat, Mauricio launched a double 117 mph off the bat. It’s the hardest hit ball by a Met this season. In his second at-bat, Mauricio struck out swinging on three pitches, but picked up a single in his third AB. The infielder finished 2-for-3.

Mauricio became the first Met to have multiple hits in his MLB debut since Steven Matz — yes, the pitcher — in June 2015.

Brett Baty returned as the third baseman. His offensive struggles continued but that could have been a product of Mariners starter Logan Gilbert who was on his game.

The Mets offense had a hard time getting to Gilbert. The 26-year-old got through 6 innings while giving up just one run; his one mistake was a solo shot given up to Brandon Nimmo in the sixth that tied the game at 1-1.

Kodai Senga was masterful again, keeping the red-hot Mariners off balance with his wide array of pitches and fooling them with his patented ghost fork.

  • Mets Pitcher Edwin Diaz Hopes To Return from Injury

Mets Pitcher Edwin Diaz Hopes To Return from Injury

New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz is not giving up on potentially playing in 2023 despite suffering what appeared to be a season-ending knee injury in the World Baseball Classic.

Diaz spoke to the media and raised the possibility of pitching again in 2023, saying it was his goal if some of his upcoming tests came back clean.

“I’m feeling great, we are working hard to see if I can come back. The doctors say I’m doing great,” Diaz said. “They want me to get my knee better first, then they will see how I respond in my strength, all these things I have to do. If the tests come back good, I might throw this year.”

Diaz pitching in 2023 is probably a long shot, but one he is unwilling to rule out at this point. He sounded optimistic after the injury, and the chances may be enhanced since his arm was not impacted.

Diaz was dominant in the closer role for the Mets in 2022, posting a 1.31 ERA with 32 saves.

  • Yankees Beat Tigers 4-1

    Yankees Beat Tigers 4-1

The names on the New York Yankees aren’t as readily recognizable, and sitting in last place in their division and likely missing the playoffs certainly aren’t familiar positions for the organization.

But Monday against the Tigers, the Yankees flashed some of their big bats and ability to pitch.

The Tigers, despite some great pitching from Reese Olson and some brief excitement in the ninth inning, lost 4-1 in the opener of the four-game series at Comerica Park.

The Yankees (63-68) came into the game playing less than .500 baseball and in last place in the American League East, losers of eight of their last 10 games.

The key turning point occurred in the seventh inning, just after the Tigers (59-72) failed to tie, or go ahead, in the sixth.

Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres connected on back-to-back homers – the seventh time the Yankees have hit consecutive homers this season – off relief pitcher Beau Brieske giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead.

  • Jets Legends Joe Klecko, Darrelle Revis to HOF

Jets Legends Joe Klecko, Darrelle Revis to HOF

Gang Green legends Darrelle Revis and Joe Klecko were both announced as members of the 2023 class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They will be enshrined in Canton, Ohio.

Revis and Klecko are part of a class that includes six-time All-Pro  offensive lineman Joe Thomas; linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Zach Thomas; cornerback Ronde Barber; senior candidates Chuck Howley and Ken Riley; and coaching candidate Don Coryell.

Revis, 37, was elected in his first year on the ballot. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler and a four-time first-team All-Pro selection during his career. He played eight seasons for the Jets over two stints. The Jets drafted him No. 14 overall in 2007 out of Pittsburgh. He quickly became a star and “Revis Island” was born with opposing quarterbacks afraid to throw his way.

Klecko was selected as one of three senior candidates in August after failing to get voted in by the regular selection committee for years. Klecko, 69, played 11 seasons for the Jets and was a Pro Bowler at three different positions — defensive end, tackle, and nose tackle.

Klecko was a two-time All-Pro selection and he led the NFL with 20.5 sacks in 1981, before the stat was recognized by the NFL. Klecko was a member of the famed “Sack Exchange” defensive line.
