The Eagles welcomed the return of quarterback Jalen Hurts and – thanks to a career performance by kicker Jake Elliott – were able to outlast the New York Giants 22-16 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

With the win, the Eagles are 2022 NFC East Champions and they clinched the No. 1 seed, ensuring that the NFC Playoffs will come through Philadelphia. The Eagles earned the conference’s lone bye and will return to action in the Divisional Round against the lowest-remaining seed.

The Giants entered Sunday’s game locked in as the No. 6 seed in the NFC, regardless of what happened against the Eagles. For that reason, they rested key starters – running back Saquon Barkley, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, safety Julian Love, and tackle Andrew Thomas were inactive despite being healthy.

Daniel Jones did not start at quarterback. Instead, the Giants went with Davis Webb, who was elevated from the practice squad on Saturday. The only starters on offense with offensive linemen Ben Bredeson and Nick Gates, who rotate at guard, and tackle Evan Neal.

The New York Giants are returning to the playoffs after defeating the visiting Indianapolis Colts, 38-10.

The Giants are now bound for the postseason for the first time since 2016 and just the second time since the 2011 season when they won Super Bowl XLVI. Along with clinching a playoff spot, New York (9-6-1) assured its first winning campaign since that same 2016 season.

Brian Daboll became the first Giants rookie head coach to earn a postseason bid since Ben McAdoo in the aforementioned 2016 campaign.

While Daboll will draw deserved acclaim, quarterback Daniel Jones has also become the first starting QB not named Eli Manning to deliver Big Blue to the postseason since Kerry Collins two decades ago in 2002.

Amid the myriad historical notes for one of the NFL’s most storied  franchises, New York checked in as the third NFC East team to lock up a playoff spot, joining the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. The NFL’s most high-profile division hasn’t had three postseason entrants since 2007.

The wait is over for New York: The Giants are back in the dance.

The Jets’ late-season collapse is now complete. Mike White threw two interceptions and the Jets failed to reach the end zone for the second straight game in a 23-6 loss to the Seahawks at Lumen Field. 

The loss was the Jets’ fifth straight and they are now officially eliminated from the playoffs, increasing their NFL-worst playoff drought to 12 years. 

“We feel like we blew the season,” rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson said. “We wanted a chance at the playoffs. At the end of the day, that’s what we wanted to do and have a chance to prove ourselves beyond that. We didn’t get there. We don’t feel good about it at all.” 

The Jets entered the game needing to win their final two and have the Patriots lose next week to the Bills. But the Jets could not find the end zone and their defense gave up enough big plays early to send them into a meaningless final week of the season. 

The loss drops the Jets to 7-9, guaranteeing their seventh straight losing season. This was a stunning fall for a team that was 7-4 at the end of November and felt like it was ready to end the playoff drought. Instead, the Jets suffered one of the worst collapses in franchise history. 

Bianca Belair had an awesome year. The Raw women’s champion for 262-plus days matured into a true superstar this year. 

Her feuds with Becky Lynch and Bayley were both high-level programs. Belair’s match with Lynch at WrestleMania was one of the best of 2022, period. 

Add to that winning the Elimination Chamber, delivering in the first WWE women’s singles ladder match with Bayley and taking part in the first women’s WarGames on the main roster.

A week after pulling off the greatest comeback in NFL history, the Minnesota Vikings nearly blew a double-digit lead of their own before walking off with a dramatic 27-24 victory over the Giants on a Greg Joseph 61-yard field goal as time expired.

The Giants were down 24-16 before putting together a desperation seven-play, 75-yard drive punctuated by Saquon Barkley busting through the middle of the Vikings’ defense for a 27-yard touchdown run.

Needing to convert the two-point conversion to pull even, the Giants did it when Daniel Jones bought time in the pocket, rolled to his right and lobbed the ball into the back of the end zone, over the reach of cornerback Patrick Peterson, where rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger made the grab.

The Vikings took over with 2:01 remaining and used a pair of clutch third-down hookups from Kick Cousins to Justin Jefferson — for 16 and 17 yards — to keep alive an eight-play, 33-yard drive that got in range for Joseph’s mammoth kick.

Daniel Jones was 30-for-42 for 334 yards, but it was a struggle all day for the Giants to find points. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes and the Giants had no answers against Jefferson (12-133) and tight end T.J. Hockenson (13-109), who had two scoring catches.

In the New York Jets’ 15th game of the 2022 season, on a rainy, windswept, stormy night in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Jets were defeated by the Jacksonville Jaguars, 19 – 3, all but ending any Jets playoff hopes. 

The Jets are not mathematically eliminated yet, but having lost four straight and six out of eight, and with no home games remaining, there is little reason to think the Jets have much chance to get in the post-season dance.

After a first half in which the Jets were completely dismantled in every phase of the game, the Jets felt lucky to go into halftime trailing by “only” 10 points at 13 – 3. 

The Jets opened the third quarter on offense and promptly went three and out.

The Jaguars then once again went right down the field to eventually kick a 41 yard field goal for a 16 – 3 lead. With the Jets  defense unable to stop the Jaguars offense and the Jets offense unable to get anything going against the Jaguars defense, the game felt like it was over at this point.

Before free agency began and all 30 teams could have taken a run at Edwin Diaz, the Mets agreed to bring back their closer on a five-year, $102 million deal. 

The deal includes a $12 million signing bonus, a sixth-year option and an opt-out after three years, plus a full no-trade clause through the opt-out year.

The contract is a record for a reliever, surpassing the five-year, $86 million deal Aroldis Chapman signed with the Yankees in 2016. The average annual value of $20.4 million also exceeds Liam Hendriks’ reliever record of $18 million, set in his 2021 deal with the White Sox.

Diaz is coming off arguably the most dominant season of any reliever, in which he recorded a 1.31 ERA and 118 strikeouts across 62 innings. He had 32 saves in 35 chances, with no blown saves over the final four months of the season.

Outfielder Brandon Nimmo has agreed to an eight-year, $162 million contract to stay with the New York Mets. The Mets keep their center fielder and the biggest payroll in baseball only gets bigger.

The Mets added to the league’s highest payroll with the Nimmo deal, having previously re-signed closer Edwin Díaz to a nine-figure deal, as well as signing AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander to a two-year, $86 million contract, during the ongoing free agency period.

Nimmo has spent his entire professional baseball career with the Mets, having been selected by the franchise in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft and making his Major League Baseball debut in 2016.

The Wyoming native has a .269 career average with 63 home runs and 213 RBIs, which includes hitting for a .274 average, 16 home runs and 64 RBI s in 2022.
