MetLife Stadium To Host 2026 World Cup

MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands will be one of 16 stadiums that will host World Cup games in 2026.
“The biggest sporting event in the world is coming to the biggest stage, and New York City cannot wait to welcome the world to our region,” Mayor Eric Adams said.
It’s unclear how many games or which ones will be played at the stadium. However, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said it’s a thrill for the region.
“We are honored to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with our neighbors across the Hudson, and we are fully prepared to deliver the world-class experience that the beautiful game deserves,” Governor Murphy said.
16 North American Cities To Host 2026 World Cup

It selected three Mexican cities, two Canadian ones, and 11 in the United States — New York/East Rutherford, N.J.; Philadelphia; Boston/Foxborough; Miami; Atlanta; Houston; Dallas/Arlington; Kansas City; Los Angeles/Inglewood; San Francisco/Santa Clara; and Seattle.

Canelo Alvarez to Defend Boxing Titles

Canelo Alvarez officially announced his next fight. Alvarez will defend his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles versus Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Alvarez (61–2–2, 39 KOs) choosing Berlanga as his opponent comes with some controversy. The Mexican superstar will reportedly be stripped of his IBF title for not facing mandatory challenger William Scull, which mean he will no longer be the undisputed champion at 168 pounds.
He will, however, be defending his WBC belt despite David Benavidez being the WBC’s mandatory challenger and pursuing a shot at Alvarez since 2022.
However, Alvarez bypassed Benavidez and WBA mandatory challenger David Morrell in favor of Jaime Munguia earlier this year and now Berlanga (22–0, 17 KOs).
Alvarez, 34, defeated Munguia by unanimous decision after knocking him down in the fourth round on May 4. He has 39 knockouts in his career, but hasn’t won via knockout since 2021.

Yankees and Rangers Split Doubleheader

Corey Seager hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run sixth inning as the visiting Texas Rangers capitalized on Gerrit Cole’s departure and beat the New York Yankees 9-4 to salvage the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.
New York won the opener 8-0 behind four RBIs from Austin Wells, but the latter game turned significantly for the Rangers after Cole was lifted following the first out of the sixth inning at 90 pitches with the score tied 1-1.
In the span of about six and a half hours, the Yankees showed flashes of the peak of their powers, a team that could out-talent others all the way to the World Series.
And flashes of what could go wrong along the way for a club that still has holes.

Ex-Knick $60 Million Contract With Pacers

Obi Toppin is staying in Indianapolis.
A year after being traded by the Knicks, the forward is re-signing with the Pacers on a four-year, $60 million contract.
The 26-year-old, whom the Knicks took No. 8 overall out of Dayton in the 2020 NBA Draft, made waves with his high-flying dunks during his three years at the Garden, but he was stuck playing limited minutes behind Julius Randle.
Still mostly coming off the bench for the Pacers, he carved out a bigger role with 21 minutes a game and set career highs with 10.3 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, field-goal percentage (57.3) and 3-point percentage (40.3).
He averaged 9.9 points and 3.3 rebounds during the Pacers seven-game second-round win against the Knicks.
For the postseason, which ended with a conference final sweep at the hands of the eventual-champion Celtics, Toppin averaged 10.9 points and 4.4 rebounds a game while shooting 54.1 percent from the field.

Aaron Judge Keeps Hitting Home Runs

Aaron Judge’s two-run home run in the first inning of the Yankees’ 8-3 win over the Blue Jays in the Bronx tied him with the Bambino for a nearly century-old franchise record.
Judge now boasts 16 first-inning home runs this season, matching the number Ruth hit in the opening frame of his famous 60-homer campaign in 1927.
Only Alex Rodriguez, who hit 18 first-inning home runs with Texas in 2001, and Mark McGwire, who hit 17 with St. Louis two years earlier, struck more in a single season in MLB history.
Judge’s 426-foot blast against Toronto’s José Berríos gave the Yankees (66-46) an early 2-1 advantage Saturday, and they led the rest of the way.
It was Judge’s MLB-leading 41st home run of the season, putting him on pace for 59. Judge had 45 home runs through the Yankees’ 112th game of 2022, when he set an American League single-season record with 62.
